The operation is carried out on an Outpatient Surgery basis. It allows the patient to return home immediately following surgery. In order to desensitise the eyes and constrict the pupils, you will be repeatedly given eye drops prior to the surgery. The eye will eventually become completely anaesthetized. You won’t feel anything! The attending consultant will explain how you should lie down and in which direction you should look. He will lightly open your eye and fix your eyelid with a gentle device that will keep it open.
The next step is the preparation of the cornea for the selected surgery method.
There are 2 methods of how to prepare the cornea for excimer laser surgery for the correction of refractive errors.
We use bladeless technology for these procedures. On the surface of the cornea – the epitel ( a flap) is lifted, so that the surgeon can reach the tissue underneath it to change the planned shape of the cornea. The replaced flap will heal naturally over 4 – 5 days.
These methods include PRK, LASEK, Epi-Lasik and Epi-Lasek, differing from each other by the way of epithelium removal either machanicly, by means of alcohol solution or special epikeratome device.
Trans-epithelial surface method. Without touching, without pain, with rapid convalescence. This new contactless surface and least invasive method involves two steps to achieve excellent result. First, using a laser with high precision and regularity we remove the top layer of the cornea (epithelium) and then laser adjusts the curvature of the cornea, eliminating refractive errors.
Throughout the treatment patient sees only lights of different colors and focuses on the green flashing light at the center. After laser ablation is finished the cornea is rinsed with cooled solution, we apply drops and cover surface of the cornea with contact lens. It will stay in place for 4-5 days.
See video of eye surgery by non-contact method.
"I looked only at the green light that was flashing, enjoyed colorful light show and after a few seconds it was all over" Thomas S.
Since during this new method we does not use any alcohol, or mechanical device, or vacuum, which traumatize cornea, healing is much faster and pain is significantly reduced. Within 24 hours after surgery, most patients are without any difficulties. It is the least invasive method, and therefore is suitable even for thinner corneas. It Can be used in about 80% of refractive errors.
"I had surgery on Friday afternoon and on Saturday evening I had no discomfort, Sunday was absolutely fine" Veronica B.
In this method, the corneal shape changes under the surface of cornea. We use a fine sharp knife - a special microkeratome or femtosecond laser to prepare superficial 100 - 130um thick layer of corneal tissue (the flap). Microkeratome or femtosecond laser are fixed to the eye by using vacuum metal ring that is pressed against the eye, the cornea is then flattened into a plane by pressure and corneal flap is created. The vacuum is released, flap is then folded aside and excimer laser makes corneal shape change. Flap is then put back.
Clinical studies have shown that 6 months after the operation result of the operation is the same regardless of procedure. The incidence of clinically significant complications is higher in Lasik and is also not suitable for every patient. The basic prerequisite for successful laser operation is to prevent complications.
